2010 MID-ATLANTIC USATF OPEN AND MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hosted by PHILADELPHIA MASTERS T&F ASSOCIATION; SANCTIONED BY USATF

SPLIT MEET across THREE DATES and THREE LOCATIONS:

One of the difficulties in conducting T&F meets (and particularly indoor meets) is that we are always at the mercy of the facilities. This year we were unable to obtain a single facility that was suitable to the type of meet we normally conduct. (The MAUSATF Youth Committee experienced the same problem.) Instead, we have found it necessary to split the meet and events across three available venues.

Glen Mills Schools has a suitable track, but we have time limitations there – we have to conclude by 12:30pm. In addition, the Pole Vault, Long Jump and Triple Jump events at GMS take up track lanes and would interfere with the 200m and 400m dashes. And, GMS cannot accommodate the Weight Throw or Superweight. GMS had available a single date which fortuitously fit our needs, so the MAUSATF HP Committee decide to conduct all track events – except the Racewalk – at Glen Mills Schools on March 7.  The GMS setup forces us, for safety reasons, to conduct the Hurdles and short sprint at 55m. And, the time constriction at GMA forced us to delete the Racewalk (and relays) at that venue Š

Š So, the Committee decided to use the USATF-NJ meet, on Feb. 21 in Tomıs River, NJ for our indoor Racewalk Championship event.

Albright College has only a four lane track and is 10 laps to the mile – 176yds per lap, not 200m. But they can accommodate the Weight Throw and Superweight. The HP Committee decided to conduct all field events at Albright and we were fortunate that a single date – that does not conflict with either the East Regional Meet (Mar. 13 in Landover, MD) or the National Championship Meet (Mar. 26-28 in Boston, MA) -- was available: March 21.

An unfortunate aspect of both the GMS and Albright venues is that both venues are spikeless – no spikes or hardsoled shoes that can hold spikes – soft soled track shoes only.

Given the less than ideal conditions, Philadelphia Masters, as meet organizer, has reduced entry costs to reflect the increased difficulties that athletes will face due to the split venues:

·       The first event fee has been reduced from $20 to $10;

·       The late (day-of-meet) fee has been reduced from $10 to $5 – though a separate $5 late fee does apply to both the Mar. 7 and Mar 21 dates.

Though the outcome is not the most desirable, it does afford all MAUSATF athletes a chance to compete for the Association Championship in their usually-contested individual events. And, it still provides an additional competitive opportunity for visiting athletes from other USATF Associations.

NOTES:

  1. Track athletes will be assigned to heats by gender, age, seed times, and MAUSATF needs -- usually women before men, older before younger.  If trials are necessary in any events, heats may be based upon MAUSATF/non-MAUSATF membership and run on a time basis in order to more easily sort out the MAUSATF results.
  2. Field Athletes:    a. LJ/TJ are open pit; Throws may be open pit or flighted, at discretion of meet officials;

                                           b.  Maximum of 6 throws/jumps in LJ/TJ/Throws.

                                           c. Competitors should bring their own implements to ensure the proper weight for their age group.

                                      d. In HJ and PV, the bar will start low and move upwards with all entrants in a single flight.

  1. Awarding of medals will take place ASAP after officials have turned in complete results for each event. Posting of full results    may not necessarily occur quite that soon – we place priority on making awards available ASAP so that athletes need not be delayed in leaving the meet to return home. Athletes should periodically (but not compulsively) check with the awards people to see if their awards are ready. Field event results generally are not turned in to awards management until all age/sex divisions of the event have been completed.
  2. Meet cancelation issue: Sometimes meets may be cancelled with little or no notice. We once had a meet cancelled just a few days in advance by a facility that had a complicated, but contractually-legitimate reason to do so. Fortunately, that was not a pre-entry meet – so no entrant $$$ were at stake. The Philadelphia area has experienced rare occasions of surprisingly intense snowstorms occurring even into April! Note: Advance entry fees are not refundable – because we incur costs even if a meet is cancelled. However, in the event of a cancellation we will do all we can to inform pre-entrants of the cancellation; AND we will endeavor to grant a 50% credit of the pre-entry fee to be put toward future Philadelphia Masters-managed event entry fees or membership fees.  We will do so via either email (preferred) or surface mail – therefore, PLEASE make sure that your mailing address and in particular your email address is written legibly on your entry form. (Historically, nearly 10% of email addresses we receive are not contactable due to illegibility.) Our first line of notification of cancellation, circumstances permitting, will be to announce the cancellation on our website: www.pmtf.net – so check that sight prior to departing for the meet.
