Southern California Association

Cross Country Grand Prix

Current Results and Standings will be posted here

Latest Update October 8

We are back for another year of the Cross Country Grand Prix here in Southern California. It is still a project in development--volunteers and input is welcome. We still have no particular funding so this is mainly for fun. Last year we came up with gift certificates for the winners. We will also award medals to the winning individuals and teams. Money and prizes complicate matters anyhow. It adds a lot more restrictions to the process.

Elligible races: We have lots of geography to cover here in Southern California. In the future we are proposing to have a series of specific races scattered throughout the territory, but this year we will continue to use any races in the area. Any Cross Country (road races don't count) races anywhere within the Southern California Association area, who will send me their results or post them on the internet, will count in the scoring. Run as many races as you want, your best five scores will count. Our bonus races, specified below in the schedule, will be October 2 at U.C. Riverside and November 13 at Mt. SAC. The point scale in those races will double in value and will go deeper. The final race is the Western Regional Championships at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, which counts triple and goes deeper still. Our first race date is August 19, 2004, which means the Sunset in the Park race in Huntington Beach. Of your five counting races, two can be outside of the Association--there are many good Cross Country races in the San Diego and Northern California areas (the San Diego-Imperial and Pacific Associations). Many of these races are independent events put on by colleges--there may not be anybody at the meet who knows the first thing about the Grand Prix.

For those who do not know; the Southern California Association includes Inyo, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

Scoring system: Based on place in your age division. 1st Place 20=points, 2nd=15 points, 3rd=12 points, 4th=10, 5th=9, 6th=8, 7th=7, 8th=6, 9th=5, 10th=4, 11th=3 12th=2, finisher=1.

Races on the schedule will be added as they are announced. Distances can be anything from 10K to 3000 meters.

You can enter all the races you want. I will automatically take the five best scores. I encourage you to check the results page often to make sure I didn't make a mistake. The final race counts triple. You must compete in one additional race in order to score in the final--that is to prevent a last minute entrant from showing up, just at the final, to upset things. Some events have multiple races, and the place/scores from each race can count. At Mt. SAC, you can only get the double points for the race in your age division. 40 year-old plus runners only count in the Masters Race.

All of these races are open, independent races. Each might have their own awards, rules and regulations--for example, Mt. SAC will restrict entries just to adults. We have no age divisions below Open. In short, a runner in High School or younger really will be disadvantaged in our series. There is a USATF Youth Cross Country program which would be more appropriate.

You have the opportunity to start in your first race (not just our first race) before you have to fulfill the requirements to enter. That means competitors who find out about the series when they walk up to their first race don't need to panic, most likely you have at least a work week to get registered in the series and USATF. If you register late, that means I will only go back one race to include your scoring.

The results and running total will be posted here each mid-week. The entry procedure is simple but it is there mainly to help me watch for your names in the results for each race as I get them. But I am but a marginally competent human being--I might make mistakes. Please alert me if you see anything wrong.

And above all, lets have fun doing this.

Here are the rules:

1. You may compete as an individual and as a member of one team. You cannot switch teams, but teams may add members. All members of a team in the final must meet all other requirements.

2. Age groups are determined by the age of the competitor on November 28, 2004--the date of the final race. The age groups for points totals will be the standard USATF age 5 year age groups: Under 30, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 etc. Open Teams (the 39 and under division) will consist of 5 men or 5 women. Masters teams (the 40 and above age division) will be comprised of 4 men or 3 women. Masters individuals may run on Open teams. If you will change age groups during the series, be sure you include that note when you enter the series. Individual races conduct their entries independently and race awards are given independently.

3. You must be a member of the Southern California Association of USATF before entering your second race.
Membership applications can be found at:
http://www.usatf.org/membership/
http://www.scausatf.org/membersh.html
or you can contact the Southern California USATF Office at:
7830 Quill Drive
Suite L-1
Downey, CA 90242
(562) 869-4574
(562) 862-2048 FAX
info@scausatf.org
Membership applications will be available at some races, but do not depend on it.

4. Competitors must declare their entry into the series. Entry forms may be available at many races, or you can e-mail me now to register info@trackinfo.org Be sure to include your name, age, sex and USATF number (or tell me when/how you registered if it is recent).

5. You can run in as many races as you would like. You must participate in a minimum of two races. You can count the best five scores toward your final point total. Weekly scores will be posted as a link from this page by the Wednesday following each race. Links to all individual race results will also be posted. Watch the results and notify me of any errors at info@trackinfo.org as soon as possible.

6. Competition within your age group counts. Points are awarded by your place in your age group in each race. 1st Place 20=points, 2nd=15 points, 3rd=12 points, 4th=10, 5th=9, 6th=8, 7th=7, 8th=6, 9th=5, 10th=4, 11th=3 12th=2, finisher=1. Final race gets triple points. Your place in the final race will serve as the tie-breaker. If both tied competitors do not compete in the final, the tie-breaker will be their most recent head to head race results. If no such result exists, duplicate medals will be awarded. In order to get double points at Mt. SAC, runners must run in the race for their age group. They may also run in the other race in order to run on a team or to add points as a single value race.

7. Southern California Association Championship Medals will be awarded to the first three competitors in each age division. Minimum: two races.
